As long as your passport is valid at the time you return home from the USA that is all that is legally required. However in reality 6 months is what the customs and immigration people are looking for at the entry point.

Six months after your return date to your home is the general rule.  However, if you have a UK passport, it just needs to be valid until the end of your trip to the US.
