How many movements are there to create new states in the Union?

Either by splitting them apart,though merger between states, or though outright annexation, with Puerto Rico being an obivous case.

Key West tried to secede in the seventies

there's a long standing movement in the NYC area

Alaska has such a movement, and Governor Palin has expressed her admiration for it. Imagine the profits if the US had to buy the oil from them

as an independent seller?

My guess is there about twenty something movements out there, trying with varying degrees of seriousness to secede.

DC should be a state.

Puerto Rico should given the option to become a state, or be cut loose to fend for itself.

I know Texas has the option of splitting into 5 different states that they vote on every 2 years or so...

I don't know of any others.
