How many neon tetras could I add to my 20 gallon tank?

I have a 20 gal. long, with 2 platys and 8 neons. How many more neons could i add?? Thanks

  1. Neons are small fish and won't add too much to your bioload. I would say you can up the number up to at least 15 in total if you're tank can support it and you do regular water changes.


  2. Depends how much you want to push the limits.

    No problem with 20 small fish in a tank like that, and you could go over that if the tank is well filtered, aerated and gets lots of water changes.

    Neons are small, and stay small, and each one contributes a very small bioload on the tank. You can bend the 1" 'rule', just make sure the tank is fully cycled and build up the numbers in stages.

    But for easy care, less fish is better.

  3. The number of fish in a tank is related to how many gallons are in it. 1 inch of fish per gallon.

  4. I'd say maybe 6 to 10 more.

  5. you can add another species of tetras as well

    as example

    6 rummy nose tetras

    6 glow light tetras

    and for the bottom you can also add 3 Cory cats and 3 otocinclus as example

  6. Tetras do great in communities, so in a 20 tank, you could probably add a couple more!
