  1. As many as you can...I have been there twice for a total of eight days, and would go back again, there are still a lot of stuff I haven't done yet.

  2. I don't know what you are interested in, but we spent 6 days in Rome this past July.  We saw all the major sites, the Forum, Colleseum, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain in 2 very packed non stop days.  I would recommend that you put aside one day for the Vatican museums, Sistiene Chapel and St. Peter's Bascillica if you are interested in seeing that. (Long lines and lots to see.)  If you go to St. Peter's or and of the other churches maintained by the Vatican, you must have your shoulders and knees covered.

If you go to the sites early in the morning (by 8 AM at the latest), the lines are not very long and you wont have to wait as long.  Also at the Forum, they have a seven day pass you can buy that gets you in to the Colloseum, the Forum and a couple of other sites, for a whole lot cheaper that getting single day tickets at each place.  Also the line is a little shorter there.

Many of the sites are within walking distance from each other, you can also take a taxi, but it is a little costly.  Take a backpack, and make sure you get a map of Rome which shows where all the sites are.

You could probably fit everything in in 3 days, but I would suggest 4 just in case you miss something or want to see something a second time.

Also BEWARE of the gypsies.  They make a living at pickpocketing, and they are very good at what they do.  Keep your money and valuables in a hidden travel belt.
