  4. I didn't know that, that's interesting :)

  5. March 21st was the Indian Calender new year. Not today.

  6. Is it?

But I'm an Assamese girl, and our New Year's going to take place next Sunday or Monday. I think today is a New Year according to the Hindu Calendar, right?

But all the same, it was a very interesting question. Rather an answer.

  7. Did not know that. Ten points!

  8. "[I]ndian calendar"??

Perhaps you mean the Hindu calendar??

Yes, April 7th is the "official" Hindu New Year this year; but perhaps you have forgotten that there are diverse opinions about the New Year in India, where the Hindu culture itself is rich and variegated.  Is it not the case that Hindus in the different parts of the subcontinent celebrate their New Year at various times of the year?

    For example:

    (1)  The Kashmiri Hindus celebrate their New Year during the festival of Navreh in the spring season, which starts on April 10th this year.

    (2)  The Hindus of Nepal begin their New Year, Nava Varsha,

    on April 10th this year.

    (3)  The southern Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh begin their New Year - Ugadi - in late March or early April.  Similarlym, the Maharashtrians celebrate their New Year, Gudi Padwa, during the same time.

    (5)  The Telugu and the Kannada New Year falls on April 8th this year:  The auspicious day of Ugadi.

    (6)  In Maharashtra, the New Year is celebrated as Gudi Padwa - a festival that heralds the advent of spring.  This year on March 30th.

    (7)  The Punjabi New Year is celebrated on the 13th of April every year.

    (8)  The first day of the Bengali New Year falls on the 13th or 14th of April every year.

    (9)  The northeastern state of Assam ushers in the New Year with the spring festival of Bohaag Bihu or Rongali Bihu, which marks the onset of a new agricultural cycle.

    (10)  The Malayalees of the Indian subcontinent celebrate Vishu, their spring festival on April 14, as do the people from the state of Tamil Nadu where, the New Year begins the same day.

Happy New Year!  Let Us Celebrate Diversity!
