I have a theory, and that is that the people who can afford to buy these things in the first place aren't "sweating" the gas prices.......

  1. I'm not.  I have another vehicle that I use for driving to work.  What I save in gas pays for the extra car.  Then I drive my truck everything else.  If you don't try to drive like the fastest person on the road, it doesn't get terrible mileage.

  2. Sorry to upset your apple cart.....We all 'feel' the pinch, but...... some of us must have the volume and towing capacity in the vehicle we buy.

  3. Yeah, I feel the pounding sensation in my shorts every time I fill up my Jeep Wrangler.

It's a trade off.  I can go anywhere and do anything, including stopping on the side of the road to pull you out of the ditch when some idiot in a Navigator runs you off the road.

I can tow airplanes with it, I can turn tighter than larger SUV's, but due to the configuration, I only get about 15 MPG.

I'll pay more for greater capability.  It's only money, I can always make more; not to say I wouldn't buy a more efficient model of the same vehicle, but my '83 CJ-7, my '88 Wrangler, and my current '05 Wrangler all seem to get the exact same fuel economy.  I like my car and I don't plan on changing any time soon.

  4. Well, here's MY position on this. I worked MANY MANY 7 day weeks to get to where I can afford a recreational vehicle that gets 11 MPG and has all the comforts of home. Now that I have it, the LAST thing I'm going to worry about is the price of fuel.

"So much country to see, so little time left"

Your theory is correct, by the way.
