I understand (and speak) Portuguese because I have studied it independently. Portuguese is full of "false friends" for Spanish speakers and to assume you understand Portuguese because what you rwead or hear makes sense in Spanish is a very common - and sometimes dangerous - mistake.

The word "acordar" in the sentence you quote is a prime example.
