  1. I'm about to start a carbon credit company, check with me in about 60 days.we will have a special rate for libs and the naive.

  2. Carbon credits are a good idea for big industry, for individuals, not so much.

For industry, targets are set for carbon reductions.  Then trading credits lets those targets be met by the companies that can do it most cheaply.  That's great for society in general.  It worked very well for SO2, the cause of "acid rain".

For individuals they're more a "feel good" thing.  There are no targets.  Unlike big companies individuals have no way to check whether the people they're buying the credits from are doing what they say they will, efficiently.

Individuals would do better to spend their money on things they actually control.  Like better insulation, lighting, programmable thermostats, more efficient heating and cooling, more efficient transportation, etc.  They'll also save money in the long run.

I also pay a fee to my utility to support wind power (they use a greater percentage of it than most all utilities).  My return is protecting your world.

J S - You're neglecting John McCain, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rudy Giuliani, Republicans for Environmental Protection (Google it) and many others.  It's not fair (or useful) to stereotype "Republicans" on global warming.

  3. Don't get sucked into that carbon credit BS.  Think about it.  If global warming is really that bad and people were legitimately trying to reverse it, wouldn't it make more sense to eliminate the supposed destructor of the environment all together?  Instead people are proposing that we purchase credits that allow people to pollute as much as they want as long as they can afford it?  There are so many alarms that should go off to this!  Doesn't it seem like this plan allows the wealthy pandering politicians to continue to lead the lifestyle they have now with very little inconvenience while they expect the average person to pay out the nose for it and limit their lifestyles?  It's load of c**p.  If people truly cared about the cause, there would be an attempt to eliminate the problem, not covering it up and pretend that paying for your pollution is ok.

  4. I do, I purchase electricity produced via solar and wind energy.

  5. My vote has far more impact than carbon credits.

I want my power to come out of the wall, and my gasoline to come out of the pump, already offset.

Though impossible to capture every government support to energy, even partial evaluations indicate the large scale of subsidies to this sector.  In a paper for the the National Commission on Energy Policy Koplow (2004) estimated federal subsidies at between $40 and $69 billion per year in 2003 (2006$).  Additional subsidies estimated between $49 and $100 billion per year come from federal policy alone.

So the range in the United States alone is $89 to $169 billion per year, divided among about 110,000,000 households.

The average direct bill of energy subsidies ranges between $800-1500 per household per year.  Compared to your gasoline bill, to use round numbers if you drive 10,000 miles at 20MPG you burn 500 gallons, about $1500.

We're handouts to the energy industry roughly comparable to what we're spending on gasoline.  If the pump says $3.00/gallon, you can consider the real cost to be more like $4.50 to $6 if you include the part that you send to energy companies every April through the IRS.

The bottom line is that there's more than enough of our dollars in the sector already to conserve for some savings, and to invest in technology and offsets to handle the rest.  We just need to put some leaders in power who have the will to do it.

Unfortunately only the Democrats have proven to take that course so far.  The Republicans are going to have to completely disown denial in order to regain my confidence, after Bush's campaign promises on global warming that turned out to be lies.

  6. Al Gore "buys" carbon credits from his own company... absolutely hilarious.

  7. You can buy them through Al Gore's green investment company Generation Investment Management.  That is where he buys them.  They also offer mutual funds in green corporations such as General Electric and Proctor and Gamble.

Lol...GIM is run by Blood and Gore.

No i don't support them. It sound like a load of c**p to me.
