How many of you would just like to pack up and move to the woods

I thought about buying an acre in the middle of the woods and plopping down a small efficient house nothing big and nothing extraordinary. I would take care of the utilities by putting in a well for water, get a wood burning\water heater type wood stove which they do make to take care of heat and so on and to install some solar panels to take care of most of the electrical needs. for entertainment i would get a free to air satellite system which could pick up over a hundred free digital channels plus locals, to finance this i would sell my leave it to beaver home and all my material possessions including my 8 cylinder gas guzzling truck and get a small fuel efficient car, then i would sell the boat, motorcycle and etc. in the process quit my stressful 50 to 60 hour a week job and get a security job or minimum wage job to take care of the basic carefree lifestyle living expenses, and if the minimum wage couldnt do the trick i would just work three to four months out of the year doing what i do now "pipe welder" and make the same amount as i would a whole year working as a security guard or etc.

  1. I have lived in the woods all my life . It is a wonderful place to be . Right now I live in the city and would give anything for the quiet of the woods again . Being raised in the mountains I am use to the peace and quiet not all this destructive nature and noise .

  2. I would LOVE that!

I am so intrigued by Throeau and Emerson!

  3. I think you r a brave one to do such thing.....that is a great thing.

I would love to do this too when i can.

Just make sure that you won't get sick of staying a lone over there without a company. some people will thing it is a hard life

for me......i tell you to go for it!

    good luck

  4. haha, no i like my modern commodities. and i don't like the insects in the wood

  5. I don't have any intention of following through just yet, but I've been working on an escape plan where I move to the backwoods somewhere and remain totally off the grid.

I was thinking about a cabin or house  with solar power and a small farm. Satellite TV and Internet and a cell phone would give me the connectivity and electrical convenience I crave.

Money would be the big problem. Initially, the idea would be to live outside the system and the economy. But thats not really practical. I think an artist or web designer or nature photographer could probably make a decent living though. It would have to be a work from home at your own pace kind of job to fit my goal. I recently started doing woodworking, so, that might be source of income.

I love the idea. Someday, when my life is in a place to make it practical, I might just do it. For now, I need to do what's best for my daughter.

I wish you well. I hope you find a way to make it happen. I'll be thinking about you every time I get the urge to unplug an run wild in the forest.

    Good luck.

  6. Man, I think about that nearly every day.  I joke to one friend of work that I always search Monster.com for "Mountain Dwelling Hermit" but haven't found such a job posting yet ;-)

Seriously, I hate my 60+ hour a week job.  It gets worse daily, the pay has not been going up sufficiently, and I would rather live in a more rural setting.

The good news is, I am fortunate enough to own 20+ acres in the Catskills.  Tons of firewood for me to harvest there to heat the home and even to sell for some income.  The bad news is, I would need to shell out the $ to build the house you envision and am just about to start a family, so financially it is not practical.  Later in life, though (I guess when it will be time to retire) I will do the mountain dwelling thing as much as possible.

Or, as a small sacrifice, due to my fiance's enjoyment of the sea, we have been discussing buying a house on the shore (in Maine) and have even looked at a few homes on islands (which are accessible by ferry only).

Go for it.  Pick up a magazine like Home Power Magazine and the ideas in there will get you excited about living off grid.
