It would increase the chances of a direct US-Russian clash...and in traditional Russia. The Bush Administration is for it. France and Germany are against it. I think it would be suicidal, as well as a breach of an American promise made to Gorbachev that if the Soviet Union withdrew from Eastern Europe that it would not seek to make them NATO allies.

  1. I'd say that promise was broken about the time Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were let in.

As for Ukraine.  No.  The more countries admitted to NATO the more pointless and bogged down in EU style debating it becomes.

  2. Ukrain should be admitted to the Nato and EU.You cannot just leave behind a free-thinking people at the mercy of the Russians

  3. The Bush administration isn't too concerned because Bush's daughters don't have to go to war and Condoleeza doesn't have children [ if she did have children they would not have to go] Cheney's family doesn't have to go .....it's always someone else's kids. [ the great majority of the time].

  4. EU membership would be more likely.

Really though, North Atlantic Treaty.  What's that part of the world got to do with that?

It won't matter soon, they'll be under the New Warsaw Pact.

  5. It would be the ultimate hypocrisy to exclude Ukraine from NATO while letting Poland and the others in...If the Ukrainian people decide they want in.

The only justification for exclusion would be to avoid Putin's anger.  See how well the policy of appeasement worked with Hitler?  We'd be condemning too many Ukrainians to death with such a move; how many died as a result of the Yalta accords?

Let Ukraine in.  If Putin complains, we can go to babel-fish to find out how to say "Bite Me" in Russian.

  6. Well we didn't see the fact that Russia would go crazy and start invading all the old S.Union states thinking their still in charge I want to See Georgian and Ukraine in NATO

  7. If the Ukraine all the requirements for NATO membership I wouldn't have a problem with them joining.  After all NATO allowed Estonia to join as well as Poland, The Czech Republic, Latvia,  Lithuania,Slovakia, and Slovenia to join.

  8. well if France and Germany are against it it must be a good thing for everyone involved.

  9. I don't think it could happen. I have been to Ukraine.  And, I have friends there. I don't even think the majority of Ukrainians want to join to become the West's cannon fodder.
