I just asked a question about how many ounces of formula an 11 month old needs a day. So what about when she turns 1 and we switch to whole milk? How many ounces of that does she need a day? Solid foods takes over then as her main source of nutrition, right?

  1. A 12 month old child needs between 16 and 24 oz of calcium per day. This can come in the form of whole milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. Just be cautious of how much milk you give your child because studies have shown that excessive amounts of milk, over 30 oz, per day can actually hinder iron absorption and cause an iron deficiency. I still feed my 16 month old son formula at bed time on nights that he hasn't eaten very well during the day. But yes solid foods should be her main source of nutrition. Just make sure that you cover all the food groups with the 3 main meals and 2 snacks. If you are looking for easy recipes that kids will eat and are nutritious then pick up "First Meals" by Anna Karmel. It is chock full of great ideas for kids age 1-5.

  2. I work in a daycare and one fo the babys takes 9 onces three times a day..but i''d say between 6-8 3 times a day

  3. There is a misconception that just because a baby can have whole milk at 12 months that they should no longer have formula.  Or maybe people are confused and think "take away the bottle" at 12 months also means formula.

For a baby that is eating a varied and healthy diet they can certainly live without formula -with or without cow's milk.  However very few toddlers are and will continue to eat a sufficient diet from 1-2 years of age.  Many end up on pediasure or other supplements to make up for it.

You know your baby tolerates formula, there is no reason to take it away completely until 18-24 months.  That's not saying you have to do all formula, you can do half and half (at the same or different times)

It's best to limit the amount of cow's milk that your child receives to 2-3 cups (16-24 ounces) per day, since too much cow's milk in a child's diet can put him at risk for iron-deficiency anemia (because milk can interfere with the absorption of iron) and may decrease the child's desire for other foods.

    SWITCHING TO MILK

I've been feeding my baby iron-fortified formula. When is it okay to switch to whole cow's milk? Research comparing cow's milk and formula-fed infants during the first year of life has shown that cow's milk is irritating to the intestines of a tiny infant, causing infants to lose a tiny bit of blood in their stools, contributing to iron deficiency anemia. There is very little iron in cow's milk anyway, and the iron that is there is poorly absorbed. Concern about iron-deficiency anemia has led the American Academy of Pediatrics, backed by solid research, to discourage the use of cow's milk in children under one year of age. One of America's top pediatric hematologists (blood specialist), the late Dr. Frank Oski , Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkin University (and co-author of a book entitled: Don't Drink Your Milk) advised parents to be cautious and not rush into the use of cow's milk, even during the second year of life. At present it would seem prudent to continue giving your baby iron-fortified formula during the second year of life and very gradually wean him to dairy products, beginning with yogurt. If your toddler generally has a balanced diet and routine hemoglobin tests show that he is not even close to being anemic, then switch from formula to whole milk sometime during the second year, but don't be in a hurry.

  4. Once a child is on  a mixed diet based on solids, 16-20 ounces of whole milk is plenty. (Too much will fill her up so she takes less of other foods, and can get anemic.)

  5. Milk is still very important, for the callcum for strong bones, i think they should still be drinking around a pint a day untill school age! Milk is important through the whole of child hood, i still get my 13yr old to drink a glass a day!
