I am on a contract for 187 days per year.  That's what I get paid for.  I have the rest of the days off.  I get about $287.00 per day.

I get 16 days of PTO (paid time off) per year which I can use for vacation, sick time, etc.  I prefer PTO plans that reward people for staying healthy.

Where I work, I accrue the time.  Two weeks vacation, 3 days personal, 3 floating holidays per year. 1.5 sick days per month.

I'm retired, but am giving back to the community by doing volunteer work.

I answer Yahoo questions, participate in neighborhood watch, donate blood, volunteered recently to clean up a public school,  and will donate time to some  worthy causes.

I also plan to spend more time now  with my grandchildren.

And, I still work part-time, when I can to pay for higher gasoline prices.

To answer your question, the USA standard (in unionized industries) is normally about 18  days off a year when you add together the total for sick leave, personal business days, birth day off, and at least one week paid vacation.  

Add that to national and state holidays, the average worker gets at least 25-30 paid days off. (and more vacation time is you've worked for an employer longer than two years).

But, in Europe, the standard is 4-6 weeks paid vacation a year.

In Europe, they actually close down whole factories, stores, and other busineses for a whole month, while everyone is gone.

Americans, overall, are more productive, but I expect Europeans are more happy.

BTW. even though teachers are off in summers, these cannot be counted as "paid days off", since their school contract year ends after school is out. (and the contract states specifically how many days their are paid, normally less than 205 with holiday and staff development days added to "pupil attendance" days.

Teachers will often take second jobs in the summer, or take more college classes,, paying their own tuitition.

Sick I think I get a month of full paid sick leave, then I have to go onto statutory sick pay - which is reduced, dunno about personal or maternity. 21 days paid vacation a year (i can carry one week over, so I actually have 28 paid days this year).
