Question:

How many parents homeschool their kids?

I have been homeschooling my daughters since mid 2007 and I have found it has worked very well for us. They used to attend a public school, and were bullied badly by not only the kids but the teachers as well. I changed their school three times, and none of the schools worked for them - and no I am not picky about the friends they have, as long as they aren't feral kids who run the streets . Anyway just wondering how many other parents homeschool their children, how long they have been homeschooling and weather they enjoy it. I love homeschooling my girls, and they love it too. Its a win win situation for me :]

  1. i wasn't a homeschooled child but my mom homeschooled my brother for a few years for the same reasons you're homeschooling your daughters... i think it can help because they get more personal attention but at the same time you want to make sure they still have a social life, i  think thats why so many parents are afraid to do it. and you want to make sure you don't strain yourself with it

i'm glad its working out for you =]

  2. Not a lot actually.  Especially if you're in Canada, you get free education...  But yes, bullies and such is a problem to some children, and so, they would prefer homeschooling.. The downside is that they don't get to interact with the outside world as much, and don't get to meet new people because you're always stuck at home.

But hey, whatever works for you.

  3. You can add this mom to the homeschool brew :)

We are in our 4th yr of homeschool and we do Living History so that covers alot of things.

  4. Hi there :)

I've been homeschooling my kids since 2000.  My oldest is 16 and he's been homeschooled since he was 8.  He did go to public school for K-2.  My youngest is 8 and he's never been to school.

When we started homeschooling, we were very traditional and structured.  That lasted about a year.  We have been unschooling since 2001 and loving it.

And to the guy who mentioned socialization, it's amazing that this subject keeps coming up when we homeschoolers have time and again debunked this lame argument.  A friend of mine (a school teacher) and I were reminiscing the other day about how much time we spent with friends in high school.  We figured it was about 30-45 minutes a day (not including the other 8 hours when we were not allowed to talk to anyone in class.  :p).  My kids on the other hand get at least 3 hours a day to just hang out with their peers (who are all, interestingly enough, "schoolies").

Homeschooling does not sentence a child to solitude any more than public school guarantees a rich and varied social life.

  5. I homeschool my 7 year old, but my 9 year old goes to public schools. My 7 yr old has been homeschooled since Kindergarten. I homeschool here because she has special educational needs that teachers in public schools don't have time for- and she works above her grade level and has the time of her life. I love homeschooling, and have allowed my 9 year to decide whether or not to go to public schools or homeschool...the decision is always public.

Homeschool is definitely the best choice for my 7 year old, and it works very well for us. :)

  6. This is our 3rd year of homeschooling.

It works very well for us.  My husband and I work in the public high school.

Our son loved school but did not learn there.

He still has plenty of friends and a very active social life.

We have found that it works well for him to separate the academics from being with friends.   Both aspects of his life are better now that he can devote a portion of the day to study without being the life of the party when there is not suppose to be a party (i.e. in the classroom).

  7. Well I am picky about the children that go to the Public schools around here. I have every right to be. Here the schools are so bad. You see small Kindergartners as Latchkey kids and walking home alone at the age of 4 and 5. Very sad to see.

I homeschool my Daughter who will be 6 in April. I ask her all the time if she likes to homeschool. She tells me all the time that she doesn't want to go to school and enjoys being home and learning.

I wouldn't have it any other way. Even if I had to work I would find a way to make it work for homeschooling. I know some fulltime two income families that still manage to homeschool. Were there is a will there is a way.

  8. In the US, about a million and a half kids.

We've homeschooled for almost three years. :-)

  9. Quite a few people do, but percentage-wise, it's not many! If an estimated 2.5% of students are homeschooled in the US (fewer here in Canada, but school is free in Canada and the US, so I don't know what that other answer is about), and the average homeschool family has 3 children and 2 parents, then a very small percentage indeed homeschool their children. :)

My children have always homeschooled--they are 7 and 10. They love it, I love it, my husband (a teacher) loves it. So many great things about it for us.

  10. We just started in November with our 3 kids and we love it! We didnt' have as much bullying as we did gossiping. The kids and the teachers gossip so much in our small town. The kids were bored and the decision was best for our family and we are really loving it. The kids as well as both parents. The kids are healthier and happier.

  11. I homeschool my 9 year old and love it. We have been homeschooling since he started K, and its a great way to bond more with your child.

  12. We do! It has been a lovely adventure for our family.

  13. I home schooled my daughter through the middle school years. She attended a Christian high school these past 3.5 years and will graduate this June with highest honors. It was a great experience for our family and enabled us to travel to many of the places we studied about.
