  1. There is no set number of cars `in a train. It depends on how many passengers are expected to board the train. Various size cars hold different numbers of passengers, just like a bus.

  2. The smallest amount of cars that I have seen was on the "heartland Flyer" that runs from OKC Ok to Ft Worth Tx.  It had 3 cars including 2 engines (facing opposite directions on opposite ends of the train)

The train could be any number of cars... I would imagine in larger applications probably around 15-20 cars.

  3. In Australia,Sydney we have ranging from 2 up to 8 cars but most of the time we run 8 which is a pain when u r doing it all day long as I'm a train driver myself!

  4. Looks like a trick question! :) Single Person to a Single Passenger! Geezzz...

  5. Some very good answers above.  I'll just make an addition or two.

Alexis must be in the know.  Twelve is a good average for most ATK long distance travel.  Ridership, in most instances, remains pretty consistent, except for around the holidays, when there's usually a slight increase, and during these times of the year a car is usually added to the consist.

Now, let's consider "special" passenger trains.  ATK does have their equipment open for charter, and one may find trains running a bit longer, depending upon the purpose of the charter.

Another "special" is in the form of the Ringling Bros. Circus Trains.  There are two, known as the red unit and the blue unit.  Although there are freight "piggy back" cars on the tail end, the train consists primarily of passenger equipment.  Here can be found 45 or more passenger cars and the trains are nearly 3,500 feet in length, if memory is correct.  It's been a while since I've been on one.

As an operating footnote, air brake rules and train handling guidelines are different for freight and passenger operations.  This changes when the passenger train exceeds 25 cars in length, when freight air rules and train handling guidelines become the same.

Thanks for the Q.  It was a good one...............

  6. In the UK it ranges from single powered railcars on rural branch lines to 12 coaches on the commuter trains around London.

Most long distance trains are 8 or 9 coaches (with the exception of Virgin Cross Country who decided that 4 or 5 coach high speed diesel units were a good idea - it wasn't but getting the rail authorities to allow the order of the additional coaches is proving difficult

  7. I once seen a train before have about 200+ Cars hooked to it.

  8. Depends on how popular that particular service is.  Remember, cars can be added or removed at the main station where that particular service starts.  It all depends on the number of tickets sold and speculation of how crowded they feel the line will be, and what time of year also has a great bearing on these descisions as well.
