Question:

How many passengers are there on a packed tube train?

I get the tube every day, and the eastbound Central Line train out of London at rush hour is always packed beyond belief with people pushed up against the windows. It's not a comfortable way to travel!

I was wondering what the nominal maximum occupancy is supposed to be on a deep-run tube train, and what it actually is at rush hour. I am certain these trains are dangerously overcrowded.

  1. The trouble is there is no set occupancy rate - tube trains are not like (for example) a theatre which has to obtain a fire certificate with a stated maximum persons permitted on the premises. The best information I can give is for the Northern Line 1995 stock which has a total seating capacity of 200 per six car train plus 20 perch seats and 48 tip up seats and 24 wheelchair spaces. The total capacity per 6 car train is quoted at 914. I cannot find find similar figures for the 1992 stock used on the Central Line

  2. Everyone complains, but everyone keeps on paying and travelling so there is no incentive to change things.

  3. I was having this conversation this morning on my way to work I get the central line every day from liverpool street right into central london and it is ridiculous the amount of people who are packed in. I don't need to hold on to the rail as there are so many people squashed up you get propped up!

  4. on average 448 per carridge

  5. TO MANY!
