  1. Grooms cakes are a different, smaller cake that is definitely not the traditional white wedding cake (with a plastic bride and groom on top).   Grooms cakes are a fun reflection of the personality of the groom. Grooms cakes can be shaped and styled to represent some part of the groom's personality, and for this reason, you have a huge allowance to be as creative as you want.

Grooms cakes are a traditional wedding cake born of tradition from the U.S. South.   Here's the story:

Years ago, there was a superstition that applied to any single woman who attended a wedding.   According to the legend, if the woman took home a slice of the groom's cake and slept with it under her pillow that night, she would dream of the man that she will marry while asleep and she'd know by morning who she would be spending the rest of her life with. (Incredible, we know. We'd bet the superstition was started by an entrepreneurial cake-maker in Mississippi.) Nowadays, the groom's cake serves a similar superstitious purpose, although the all in the name of fun.

Regardless of whether or not the superstition holds any truth, the tradition is coming back into style...and it's pretty awesome for all the possibilities.

  2. My FH hates desserts. One cake maker we visit who we may go with gives a free groomscake with order. My dad love cake he says he only goes to the weddings for the cake so we are giving the cake to my dad. I have been a bridesmaids 17 times and only seen 1 grooms cake and that was in Alabama. So it is a southern thing that we are not doing.

  3. We had a groom's cake at my daughter and son in law's wedding -- his was the preferred cake!

I think it's more of a southern tradition.

  4. Iv'e been to MANY weddings and never saw a groom's cake

  5. We aren't having one at our wedding.

We didn't see the point of it, because the groom helps pick out the wedding cake. It's not the bride's cake it's both the bride and groom's cake.

  6. Although I have never thought about it, it must be a Southern tradition. I am from Mississippi and I have lived in Louisiana.  All of the weddings I have been to have had a groom's cake.  Traditionally, the wedding cake was all white and the grooms cake is usually chocolate.  I always thought it was just an alternative to the white wedding cake.  Also, the groom's cakes that I have seen are usually decorated to depict a hobby or interest that the groom has.  Research will tell you that it is so the unmarried women can put a piece beneath their pillow.  Honestly, I don't know anyone who has done this.  Also, you will see that it is traditionally a fruit cake.  Hmmmm....  Never seen that, I can understand why that tradition feel by the wayside!

  7. i've been to dozens of weddings and only one where there was a groom's cake. i never even heard of them until that wedding i went to last year.

  8. I'm getting my fiance a groom's cake--well.. a groom's brownie--because he hates cake.

    I guess that's a good reason!

I think it's just something special to do for him on your wedding day.  Because everything else seems to be about the bride.

That said, I've never been to a wedding with a groom's cake.

  9. We have chosen not to do a groom's cake simply because we are already spending tons of money on the reception.  My fiance and I made this decision together and if money was not running out, I would have definately done a grooms' cake... but as you get closer to the date (we're less than 2 weeks away) you might have to cut somethings or not be able to do everything you had planned...

If money is no option or if it's not very expensive - go for it :)

  10. we had the traditional white wedding cake, then a chocolate extravaganza for the groom's cake. that way we got 2 cakes!

  11. I think if u want to get him one there is nothing wrong with it

  12. as I'm a guy...I never knew anything about a my groom cake until at my wedding and I it was good.  It was a dark chocolate cake with chocolate shavings... a good contrast to a white wedding cake with white vanilla taste.  Many people like to have a choice of taste...
