under supervision outside in our communities? Does being in jail actually help an offender to rehabilitate, or does it by association increase their chances of becoming an even more hard core criminal?

  1. I don't know where the idea that prisons are for rehabilitation came from. They aren't. They are for punishment.

How many prisoners are declared rehabilitated, released, and quickly re-offend? The majority of them. Even in this touchy-feely soft-hearted system. With sentences for even the most horrific crimes getting softer, (a child rapist in Vt. got less than 2 years), prison is hardly even an inconvenience for some of these offenders. It's where they go to regroup.

I, and many other people, say let them rot. Increase the penalties for crimes, (especially the violent ones), and make them serve the whole term. Overcrowded? Well, we can always build more.

Or not. Don't really care about their comfort.  It's meant to be about the comfort and safety of society, not about the comfort of those who choose to ignore society's conventions.

  2. Anyone arrested for marijuana charges , how many ? Not sure but I would rather have them living next to me than a child molester out on early release because the jails are full.

  3. work in a prison.

they already are. you just don't know it.  and the pulic likes to keep it that way.

  4. I think there are a lot of people who are in prison who could probably do without being in there.

Consider people who are in prison for accidents...harmful accidents but accidents all the same. for example a person who has been responsible for a car accident because they misjudged lights, and have killed one or more people. These people will suffer for the rest of their lives without being in prison. There was no INTENT to kill, and that makes a difference I believe, especially when far worse criminals get lesser sentences.

The person above had a point with marijuana...as long as they are not selling masses to others, then there shouldn't be a problem and they shouldn't be imprisoned. After all, alcohol causes a LOT more harm, and is perfectly legal.

Prison is considered rehabilitation as well as punishment for many, and I think that in many cases both can and should take place outside the prison system. There would be more room for the nasties to stay longer, and more would be done to benefit the community at a lower cost.

  5. I dont think jail itself can rehabilitate a person who has committed a serious crime. For example, normal healthy minded people do not have the desire to abuse children. I think there is something in these people who make them desire to commit these crimes and simply locking them away does not change their mentality.  They need to change the way they think, not just sit in a cell all day contemplating what they are going to do when they get out and who they are gonna do in for landing them in there. It is very expensive for taxpayers to keep people in jail doing nothing so why not make them useful? If they can work in the community to create something that makes the community better surely that must be rewarding for them.

  6. People should be allowed to work and do useful jobs.

I was in prison and got to do some work in prison but not outside. You make just a tiny ammount an hour but it can go toward buying some stuff in prison.

Much preferred having something to do than just being in my cell hours on end. Should pay a decent wage though so you can save up some money for when you get out

  7. We have a work release program in the State of Delaware.  This allows the prisoners to work, to earn money for their family, and still to serve the prison time that is due.
