How many people are in the environmentalist groups in the USA?

That is a tough question to answer - I would look at some of the larger organizations like Greenpeace, the Sierra club, the Green Party USA, etc, and double the number - very rough, but I guess you're looking for a rough estimate.

The interesting thing about the current environmental awareness - by current, I mean just in the past two years - is that is is now both a bottom-up movement (and at the bottom, there are FAR FAR more people with an environmental "awareness" than there are people who formally belong to an environmental organization) and a top-down movement (every large company has gone "green" in an attempt to win customers and cut fuel/energy costs) for the first time in U.S. history.

The current environmental awareness is extremely widespread, and goes WAY beyond the official numbers of people who are in formal organizations. Only a reactionary administration has kept this movement from resulting in widespread legislative changes.
