How many players is most effective?

Seems like the more you have, the more confusing it is-- we're trying to work out a nice number. Now we have 5 players- but maybe 3 or 4 would be more effective?

8th grade- 6-2 rotation.

  1. It usually get smaller as the players get older.  Junior high almost always uses 5 players.  High schools use 3 or 4.  Colleges use 2 or 3.  International uses 2.

The bigger and faster the players, the more court they can cover.  With fast players, 2 is great.  As stated above, it is easy.  Put a line down the middle and split the court in half.  However, if you do not have 2 fast and aggressive player, you will have to add more players in the pattern.

  2. definiterly 3

  3. Usually, I've seen in a 6-2 is a 4 man serve received with the setter stacked at the net with one of the hitters.  The four receivers should form a sort of cup or trapezoid with the two front row players being the wider end and the two back row players being the shorter end.  The front row passers are responsible for anything short and anything behind them is back row territory.

  4. 5 is the best, if you get confused is because you don't a a good coordination and the team should talk more. Im 15 and we use 5 at recieve it works wonders and we hardly miss any serve or spike.

  5. 2 is the easiest to do because the court divisions are clear, one person gets half, the other person gets the other half.  When you introduce more people in the mix, it makes it easier to recieve but it also adds more confusion.

  6. Two would be ideal if your back row players have good footwork, so that you can keep your front row hitters fresh and mobile.

You may involve your outside hitters in serve receive, which would make it "four" (or you can call it 2-half-half, which mathematically gives you "3"). The serve would never get both of your outside hitters involved in the same "receive" action. It feels safer this way.

Five is the maximum, as you want to hide the setter.

  7. We run a 6-2 and when it is serve receive, the setter pulls up the person directly in front of them and the person in middle front stays at the net and the other front row player swings back to pass. If the setter is in middle back then she would pull up the middle front person to the net. Then either the left front person or right front person swings back to pass, which ever one is a stronger passer. If your passers are struggling you can always pull back the other front row player to get the short serves. Just make sure no one overlaps anyone.

  8. it depends by the current rotation and the position of the setter(or setters ,if you play with 2 settrs and 4 spikers ). Anyway mostly there are 2 main receivers ,that cover most of the court, and 2 secondary receivers who cover a smaller area ,helping the main receivers if neccesary
