  1. Maybe a couple hundred thousand or so if they are standing.


  2. The Piazza is about 25,000 square meters (about 6 acres), so allowing 4-5 people per square meter (a pretty thick crowd) would result in around 100-125,000 people.

    Note that on very popular occasions (declaration of new Saints, coronations and funerals of Popes) the crowd spills over to via della Conciliazione and neighboring streets, so that even more people might be present.
