  1.     I think only the hutterites are close to it. This global warming crock would not have such a following, if people realized just how much we are dependent on fossil fuels. If energy is expensive, everything is expensive.

This would be mostly tough on the working poor.

How can democrats not see this? It's as stupid as their incomprehension of the advantages of producing more oil here. If they didn't dominate the education system, they would not have enough idiots to elect them, even with their vast majority amongst lawyers, welfare cases and government employees.

  2. Please give your definition of self sustaining.

If you mean - growing your own food, raising your own animals, spinning your own wool, etc. etc.. Maybe no one is truly self sustaining.

Also how can that possibly better the world?

  3. Those who blame government haven't done their homework, aren't fully aware of what is meant by "self-sustaining," or are not aware of the price of being disconnected from the processes that are involved in becoming self-sustaining.

I think over the next decade, a fair portion of the population could move toward a fully sustainable lifestyle.  The effort would have to be driven by individuals, the immediate community, and have support from state and federal governments.  All stand to benefit.

There is a wariness of government intervention on this site, but co-ops done right can enrich our lives many times over.  I hope I haven't dodged your question by saying, "A fair amount," but of course that would depend, wouldn't it, on many factors, and would vary from region to region.  As to the second part of the question, I would have to say not living sustainably is largely self-imposed at this point.  Unless you've tried -- and yes, the people I know that did often encountered resistance on several levels -- you can't point the finger at anyone or anything.

A few links from my list on sustainability for those wanting more information.  It's a fascinating field and one we'll be hearing more and more about in the years to come.  My family is going to be building an "EcoNest" home in the next few years, and it is my fervent desire to achieve the highest possible level of sustainability I can, and, hopefully, to live "off the grid."

  4. I'm currently and always plan to be economically self sustaining.  In fact, I should have an abundance that I plan to pass to my children.

I can't see how anyone can be self sustaining government, as the government is necessary to protect individual rights.

I plan to grow my own foods and sustain my livelyhood, however I still see benefit in being connected to the electrical grid.

  5. government taxation, regulation, beauracracy, and tyrranny makes it increasingly difficult for anyone to be self sustaining.

    This is by design.

They want everyone to ultimately work for the government, where they can control you and literally keep an eye on you, and also when you work for them, you are completely at their mercy - basically it's no different than being on welfare.

The second best option is for you to work for a big corporation, where the beauracracy there will stifle the average person and again, turn them into mindless robots.

Although the government has less direct control over you if you work for a large company, at least you are controlled by tyrannical politically correct rules.

Governement's worse nightmare is an educated mass of small business owners and entrepreneurs who defy the corporate world and who want the tyrants to keep an arm's length away.

But most of these people are under huge tax burdons and are under constant harrassment by the bloodsucking lawyers who sue them at every turn.
