Here's a definition: Community organization is "a planned process to activate a community to use its own social structures and any available resources to accomplish community goals decided primarily by community representatives and generally consistent with local attitudes and values. Strategically planned interventions are organized by local groups or organizations to bring about intended social or health changes" (Bracht 1999, p. 86). It is sometimes referred to as community empowerment, capacity building, and partnership development.

If you want to make fun of people who were community organizers, you have to include Martin Luther King, Jr., and all the founding fathers. So what are the Republicans saying by making it a term of ridicule?

  1. What we're saying..

Planning block parties does NOT give you any qualifications to run the country.

  2. Corruption.

Explaining the “community organizer” joke to the outraged Left

ACORN has milked nearly four decades of government subsidies to prop up chapters that promote the welfare state, undermine the free market, and perpetuate illegal immigration and voter fraud.

  3. Community organizer = Urban planner

Urban planner = A degree invented by liberal minded academics so liberal minded students with questionable intellect can get government grants and graduate without actually having to study anything, wrtie an original paper or take a test.

  4. And yet if those citizens Obama helped when he was a community organizer 20 yrs ago went to the government for help, the Right would be all over that too

  5. Just so you can remember what the different players here stand for:

Jesus of Nazareth was a community organizer.

    Pontius Pilate was a governor.

  6. The Founding Fathers were not community organizers, they were revolutionaries. Until the people in the Chicago slums pick up arms (okay, I guess they've already done that step) and declare themselves an independent state, there is no comparison.

People are making fun of B. Hussein Obama using his experience as a community organizer as proof he can be leader of the free world. And judging by the fact that Chicago's slums are just as bad as they were when he was doing his "work" there, it doesn't portend a bright future for America if he's elected.

  7. "What we're saying..

Planning block parties does NOT give you any qualifications to run the country."

Nor does crashing your jet while bombing civilians and getting captured and tortured.

  8. This is not meant to be political.

Who comes up with ways to make mondain jobs sound great?

I have seen descriptions of ditch digging that look great. LOL

  9. Martin Luther King was primarily a pastor and civil rights activist.  Jesse Jackson better fits the pattern of the community organizer.  He signed up a bunch of minority owned investment counselors, agreeing to take his list of them around to fund managers in exchange for a cut of the profits.  To the fund managers he threatened a variety of forms of retaliation, such as picketing and lawsuits, if they didn't hire organizations from his list.  This came so close to being a RICO violation that one firm finally balked and reported Jackson to the US Attorney.  In short, community organizing is essentially a petty protection racket.

  10. No one is trying to denigrate community organizers!  They are just pointing out the double standard between telling someone who was a mayor and a governor and someone who put together block parties, fundraisers, and Saturday night basketball games

  11. it is someone who puts your trashcan's back up by the house, and arranges your patio furniture
