  1. The only part of radacheck's answer I would challenge is that fifes and drums were first used militarily by the Continental Army.  They were, at the the command of George l, used by the British Army some fifty years earlier. Such music is, to this day, part of the tapestry of Colonial Williamsburg, Va.

  2. fife are the whistles or flutes being played, drum for rhythm while marching.

  3. A fife is a small, high-pitched, transverse flute that is similar to the piccolo, but louder and shriller due to its narrower bore.

A drum is a drum.  As one of the United States Army's premier musical organizations, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps has inspired audiences throughout the Nation and abroad for 47 years. Founded on February 23, 1960, the men and women of the Corps proudly carry on traditions that accompanied the birth of our Nation.  To see the unit is to experience history come alive - a proud tradition that began with the musicians of the Continental Army and continues today!
