I think the population of New Orleans is somewhere around 350,000 now. I would imagine that almost all of them will have to evacuate.

new orleans is just another possible taget for a catagory 3.4.5 along the cost from huston texas to jacksonville gustav is a thousand miles across and theres another huricane right behind it at 24hrs over the bahamas its about six hundred miles across at catagory 2

why are we only concerned with the people in N.O.is it because they wined the loudest last time .We must remember that other places were hit hard too.If they don't get out this time then they are the most stupid people on earth.Instead of having a town idiot We will have a idiot state in america.They where warned last time and have been warned this time too.

The population of New Orleans is between 1,250,000 and 1,300,000.

During Katrina, 90% of the population (then 1,400,000) evacuated on their own and the highways were empty by 6:pm on the evening before the storm made landfall.  About half of those who could not or would not leave went to the SuperDome, which was the designated shelter.  The remaining 5% were the ones you saw stranded on roofs or at the Convention Center.

Many (maybe most) of the people who did not evacuate for Katrina have not returned to the city and therefore won't need to be evacuated.  This time, the city and state will not open a shelter inside New Orleans, but instead are moving those who need transportation to shelters in north Louisiana and other states. It should work much better than 2005.
