I have played both.  Checkers was the first that I learned how to play.  Then, when I learned chess.  Checkers became to elementary.  Playing chess on line is OK, but playing someone face to face is better.  

But, as far as how many people play chess or checkers.  That question, I don't think can be answered accurately.  Chess is more popular then checkers.  If you don't know how to play, I might have to teach you, and if you do we might just have to play someday.
