  2. Uncountable-but the population was devestated! The sack was pretty bad, with lots of civillians killed in the initial blood lust  of the assault, but the systematic torture and execution of the survivors for their hidden treasure was much worse. The Spanish gained a reputation for unbelievable cruelty and harshness greatly "outshone" that of their German Landsknecht compatriots.

    Try the book "The Sack of Rome" for the reasons they army got out of hand, some good casualty estimates (sorry, I can't remember the numbers!) and the defence of the octagonal church the Pope holed up in.
