This is a very vague question, since pictures can be all kinds of sizes depending on the size, quality, and compression of the picture. However a 4 GB flash drive could comfortably store a few thousand pictures.

Depends on the size of the pictures. But more than you would ever need to hold. Over 4 thousand. My pictures I have taken and put on the computer, I would be able to fit over 4 thousand on the 4gb flash stick.

Your average camera you will probably get about 2000 pics with that.  It all depends though, on many factors.

You will get more pics if you have a smaller resolution, but they will be smaller pictures and not good if you want to enlarge them later.

File format plays a role as well, are you using jpeg (which is the smallest picture size for cameras) or tff (which is the best quality, especially for editing).

4GB should be large enough if you are talking about a card for your camera.  I recommend though, that you always dump the card to your computer and erase anything you don't want to show off on the camera itself so that you have the maximum space each time you take your camera for a trip, you never know how many pictures you may want to snap.
