  1. All your pieces to the other side.

  2. One piece per die, or two pieces altogether, if  you can do it legally.

You can combine the roll into moving one man, provided each die move can be made legally... in other words, if you roll a 6 and a 5, you can move one man 11, as long as he can legally move either 5 and then 6, or 6 and then 5.  (if the spots that are 5 and 6 pips away are blocked, you can't move that guy, even if the spot 11 pips away is available).

If you roll doubles, you get to make FOUR moves of the number showing up on each die.  Rolling double 5's for example, allows you to make FOUR moves of 5 pips each.

If a legal move can not be made based on a die roll, then that roll is simply ignored, and does not cout.

  3. Not sure if this has been made clear.  You must move as much of your roll as is possible.  So if you roll for instance, a 4 and a 5 but only the 5 is playable then you are forced to play a 5.  The 4 is then ignored because there is no legal move on this roll.

There may be different ways of playing a roll.  In such case you can choose how to play it.  For example the opponent may have a piece on the bar and most of your home board may be closed (say you have 2 pieces on each of the 1, 2, 3 and 4 points and a single piece on your 6 point). Let us say you roll a 6 and a 2.  You could take off the piece on the 6 point with the 6 and then you would have to leave a shot by playing the 2 lower down in the board.....eg taking off a piece on the 2 point.  However, the rules permit you to play the shot another way. You can first play the 2 moving the piece from the 6 point to the 4 point and then use the 6 to lift a piece off the 4 point, leaving no open shots from the bar.

If you set up this position on a board you will probably understand it better than simply reading this explanation.

  4. If you roll the dice and the same number comes up (a double), you can move the pieces twice as many times. For example, with a role of 2-2, you may move 2 points 4 times in any given combination (one piece 8 points, two pieces 4 points each, one piece 6 points and the other 2, two pieces 2 points and a third piece of 4 points, four pieces 2 points each ). Usually, the more doubles a player rolls, the greater his chances of winning the Backgammon game.
