  3. 32 pieces to a chess set. 16 pawns (8 on each side), 4 rooks (2 on each side), 4 knights (2 knights on each side), 4 bishops (2 bishops on each side), 2 kings (one on each side) and 2 queens (1 on each side).

  4. Playing pieces number sixteen for each of two sides.  (Note:  Always put the queen on the square of her color!)

    The forgotten piece is the board.  It is needed for play.  (Note.  Remember that 'White is Right'  - - - meaning that the color of the bottom row's square on the players rightmost side is white, not dark!   Turn the board or sit at the table so the white square is on the right.)

    In sactioned battles, the last piece is the timer.
