  1. 10.  In addition to the 8 current official planets, Pluto was a planet, and in the first half of the 1800's, Ceres was a planet.  The International Astronomical Union could change their mind on the definition of the word "planet" and who knows, we could have over 40 in our solar system.  That would be fun for kids to memorize!

The current count of extrasolar planets is about 270.  This number changes nearly daily, but never goes down.

  2. There are (by the IAU's figures) eight planets and four planetiods in the Solar System, but that's trivial compared to the number of known planets around other stars. The count of extrasolar planets, which was zero until a few years ago, is in the hundreds now. Planets, it seems, are extremely common.

  3. There are now 8 planets in the Solar System, but there are plenty of planets in other systems (orbiting other stars)

At the last count there were 307 extrasolar planets.

That makes a total of 315 planets, as of 22nd July 2008.

More are being discovered so the count will increase.
