  1. 13 in rugby league 15 in rugby union

  2. On the field there are 15 players in a team with 7 players on the bench as reserves. The 15 players consist of 8 "forwards" and 7 "backline" players. The 8 forwards (tradisionally the bigger stronger guys) consist of

    2x props (no 1 and 3)

    1x hooker (no2)

    2x locks (no4 and 5)

    2x flankers (no6 and 7)

    1x eighth man (no8 naturally)

    The backline consist of

    1x scrumhalf (no9)

    1x Flyhalf (no10)

    2x centres(no 12 and 13)

    2x wings (no 11 and 14)

    1x fullback (no15)

The reserves are no 16 to 22 in no particular sequence. They are picked as impact players mostly. This mean that they are put on the field late in the game to get fresh legs for the final say 20 minutes of the game. When somebody get substituted they are not allowed back on the field except if it was a blood substitution or if all the other front row (no 1,2 and 3) substitutes are already on and one of the front rows get hurt - he can then be substituted by the front row guy who was taken off earlier.

There are other types of rugby with different numbers of players on a team for example :

Seven a side Rugby - obviously 7 player per team on the field

Touch rugby - don't know how many players per team

    Rugby league - don't know

Aussie rules rugby - don't know

    Hope I this help
