How many points does St. Kilda need to win by Sunday to overtake Adelaide on percentage for 4th place?

Essendon vs. St. Kilda Sunday at Telstra Dome, 4:40 p.m. Melbourne time. What does the winning point margin have to be for St. Kilda to get by Adelaide for fourth place on the ladder? Adelaide final season percentage is 109.74. St. Kilda percentage is at 105.04 before the round 22 game.

I checked the Age, Herald Sun, AFL and St. Kilda websites for information, nothing found. I would reckon this information would have been in the Sunday papers, something St. Kilda supporters would be interested in. Thanks for your answers.

It's a complicated formula because percentages are proportional and therefore it depends on the relative scores of both teams.

Theoretically if the Bombers didn't score at all, St Kilda would need a score of 88.

If the Bombers score 30 points, St Kilda will need 122 points. (win by 92)

If the Bombers score 50 points, St Kilda will need 144 points. (win by 94)

If the Bombers score 80 points, St Kilda will need 177 points. (win by 97)

If the Bombers score 100 Points, St Kilda will need 199 points. (win by 99)

To work it out for any score, here's the formula:

If Bombers score in todays match is BS,

Saints Score Needed = (1.0975 x (1884+BS)) - 1979.

So basically, it's around the 95 point mark and gets to around 100 if the bombers are making a game of it. I don't think the newspapers are big on the algebraic formulae though! Hope that helps.

About 90 points. I don't think Essendon will let that happen though , with club greats Jason Johnson, Pevril and Rama retiring.
