Compared to other countries i.e. police per 1000 people. Monaco has 1 policeman for every 40 people - that would mean Britain would have 1.5 million police officers (if my maths is correct) and somehow I really don't think we do....

  1. Notamused is wrong, there are more now. I am sorry that I cannot tell you, i would assume that there are 4 bluebottles in a 1000 of us. That would make 240,000 police in all.

    Does that sound right?

  2. our police-public ratio is slightly different to most. we have about 40 for each politician, about one for each Muslim and about one to share among every  fifty thousand British people. (unless your doing 35 in a 30 limmit) then every policeman in Britain seems to be in one place. it wouldnt matter how many we had. the legal system is nothing at all to do with the people. its just there to keep criminals on the streets. and rake in tax payers money.

  3. A lot less than there was when labour came to power.

  4. In Spetember 2007, there were 139,710 police officers in UK (http://police.homeoffice.gov.uk/human-re...  Population was about 60.5 million (Wiki). So that's 1 copper to every 433 people.

Needless to say, a lot of those officers won't be street workers.

  5. why are you asking are you going to do something illegal

  6. Police Per Capita (Nation master) -

However I dispute nation masters figure of 152,000 police in the UK, given than England and Wales alone had 139,710 police officers as of September 2007. There were also a further 16,221 in Scotland, a further 7,500 in Northern Ireland and a further 2,774 in the British Transport Police.

Making a grand total of 166,205 Sworn In Civilian Police Officers in the UK with a further 28,000 Auxiliaries in the shape of  12,000 Special Constables and some 16,000 PCSO's.

A further problem in international comparisons is when taking in to account Gendarmeries (Military Police) and countries who count Border Police within their figures, whilst Quasi-Police Agencies such as SOCA or the FBI are usually excluded from such figures.

The Home Office only deal with police in England and Wales, the Scottish and NI Offices deal with policing in their respective areas.
