How many public bus systems are in America?

I'm doing research for a debate. We're trying to get each bus company to replace one bus with a hydrogen-powered bus and we need to figure out how much it would cost.

I'd guesstimate hundred to two hundred thous.

well there are a lot of transit companies in america

some ever services two states and as such are counted twice

(one for each state)

then in California almost every county has sometype of transit

system and thats just california!

In California, all counties and many cities have them.  

I would say around a thousand nationwide.
