I suppose it depends on how you look at it.  The Von Trapp family had seven children, although the actress who played the oldest child was actually in her early 20's at the time, so would she be considered a child?  Also, are you asking how many children were in the family or how many children were in the entire movie.  In the story I would say eight children, seven Von Trapp children and Lisel's love interest Rolf who was 17 going on 18, but in terms of age I think only 6 were actually under 18.
