  1. 18 are possible total, 9 for white, 9 for black.  In actual, tournament games, 5 queens on the board at once has been recorded multiple times.  A number of games that have claimed to have 6 and 7 queens have all been proven fakes, including the famous Alekhine - Grigoriev, Moscow 1915.  Check the source if you want more information.


  2. 9, the one you start with and 8 more, 1 for each pawn

  3. In one game back in the 1920's a grandmaster had 4.

  4. Theoretically, you can have nine (9) Queens in play, as each Pawn can be promoted to a Queen.  In actuality, it would be extremely rare to see more than two (2) in play.
