Question:

How many "Ministers" and "Cabinet Ministers" do we have in UK?

and how much are we paying for them?

In the 'old days' there seemed to be about 20 Ministers, and they were the Cabinet. Now we have (or seem to have) hordes of junior nothings, all appearing on TV or radio, with the title "Minister" ...

Anyone any rough ideas?

  1. You'll find a full list of all cabinet members at: http://www.pm.gov.uk/output/Page12165.as...

  2. Blair put many more carriages on the gravy train and the number of Ministers exploded (as I wish they all would) and the good times rolled as they wasted all our money.  Basically he invented new (& Improved)positions as a form of patronage -  Minister of State for Shoes, Minister of state for Mondays, Tuesday etc

    Now it's all gone.

  3. Currently 22 paid ministers and one unpaid minister appointed to Cabinet.

    In addition - Law Officers

Attorney General - The Rt Hon the Baroness Scotland of Asthal QC**

Solicitor General - Vera Baird QC MP

Advocate General for Scotland - Lord Davidson of Glen Clova QC

    - HM Treasury

Financial Secretary to the Treasury - The Rt Hon Jane Kennedy MP

Minister of State - Liam Byrne MP (jointly with Home Office and Minister for the West Midlands)

Exchequer Secretary (Parliamentary Secretary) - Angela Eagle MP

Economic Secretary (Parliamentary Secretary) - Kitty Ussher MP

and so on for every department, possibly 100

  4. 630 is the standard fig:

  5. There are 635 constituency MPs.

The basic salary of an MP in the House of Commons was increased to £60,277 on 1 November 2006. Many MPs (ministers, the Speaker, senior opposition leaders etc) receive a supplementary salary for their specific responsibilities. As of the 1 April 2006 increment these range from £25,255 for junior whips to £126,085 for the Prime Minister.

  6. Good question.  Amazing that some people think ministers means MP's isn't it.

The first poster has suggested the right link. But while you are on 10 DowningSt website have a look round. If it's just  the number of ministers you want then look here: http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page1...

There have been junior ministers for a long time. There will probably be more positions under a Labour government because that is one of the key differences between Lab and Con - the amount of state activity.

However, there is another aspect to your question. There are all the additional positions now in Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland and I guess if you add them all up there will be a much higher number now compared, for example, to Harold Macmillans time. Well spotted.
