Hi- I don't even know if it is leaves or leafs...I am doing a cost comparison project for school...so I need to know how many leaves in a small hay bale. I have been told a small bale is about 65 lbs...and that 1 horse eats about 2 leaves per day...please correct me if I am wrong...thanks for the help!

  1. It's flakes, not leaves. You usually feed 2 in the morning and 2 at night depending on how big the horse is. The bigger the horse, the more flakes.  With square bales going at an average of $4.25 a bale, with 8 horses I will go through at least 4 a day. So it really depends on who bales it, and how big they can get it, but usually it's about 10 flakes per bale. If your doing cost comparison on stables, don't forget to add the cost of the barn/mortgage, the electric, water, shavings, grain, supplements, labor, ect.

    Horses get expensive.  Good luck.

  2. I think you are talking about the sections of the bale not the leaves.  A section will take up about 2 to 4 inches of the bale.

It will vary on the type of hay.
