How many rings does one give the call before disconnecting?

While calling another person, there are a certain number of rings in which the caller gives the callee to answer, in a timely manner.

That is entirely up to you.  There is no such standard.  If you have come across any such standard it was probably concocted by Dr. Phil or a Dr. Phil want-to-be.

About 10 rings on a landline phone, which is roughly 45 seconds.

By comparison, most cell phones cut to voicemail at 30 seconds, but you'd expect people to answer their cell phones faster as they'd be carrying them, unless they are not available to answer.
