Please include exact age and any reasons why you still are not financially independent. I'm trying to figure out what is "normal" for "leaving the nest". Thanks a ton.

  1. Good question! It all depends upon the tolerance of the parents and what the student wants in life. The day after I finished college, my mom was already pushing me out of the nest. On the other hand, I have a friend who still lives with his parents and has formed a symbiotic relationship with them. IDK about paying rent, but my parents help out, on occasion, when I am in dire straits, but I don't look to it as an expected help.

  2. Not me.

I moved out at 18 and started paying my rent for my university accomodation. Worked hard (16 hours\week at least in term time and roughly 60 hours\week in the holidays in the laboratory at my local hospital)

Bought my first flat on my own at 22 (no financial help from parents or anyone else).

Bought second flat at 24 with my boyfriend as we needed more space.

Am now 25 years 4 months old and have returned to university to do my PhD. I have ~1000\month research bursary and I do private tutoring to make some extra money. I still cover my part of the bills and mortgage.

I am very proud of myself because rather than sit around whining that house prices are too high and that I'll never be able to afford my own place I went out worked hard didn't waste all my money on drinking and going out all the time and got myself my own place. :-)

  3. I'm not sure what's normal - every family situation is different.

I moved out after my freshman year in the dorms (18), and have been on my own ever since.  Parents didn't pay diddly squat.  I was fortunate to find a job right at graduation, so I didn't need to rely on them.
