I heard when you are hunting you don't feel recoil but i also heard that the 300 Win Mag kicks like a mule and can only shoot about 5 rounds out of it so what do you think.

  1. Its not that bad, (its not good either) but I can probably shoot a whole box of 20 rounds before i absolutely must stop. And with that many shots, I'll still have a nice bruise in the morning.

  2. One of my children is somewhat sensitive to recoil; another is pretty well impervious. It's a very personal thing.  It's also true that shooting offhand in the woods will let you go with the recoil a lot easier than if you're crouching over it at the bench.

  3. It all depends on the person.  The load your shooting  and how much the gun weighs.  I can shoot mine all day.  Recoil doesn't bother me.

  4. I don't mind it. I love shooting my .300 win mag. The next morning I always have bruises all over my shoulder though.

  5. A hunting shot you won't notice. On the shooting bench it will give you some recoil. If your worried about that have a Vais muzzle break installed.

Some wana-be-know-it-all is going to say it makes the report louder. That was the old style breaks the new style work better and do not appreciably raise the sound level.

Yes, I have one on my 375 H&H Mag and she kicks like a 308 round going off. It wasn't too bad before but now it's a cream puff

  6. Recoil is something that you get used to.  As you learn proper shooting technique and get used to muzzle blast, recoil isn't a big factor when shooting.

When I was 13, I would get sore after shooting a dozen rounds of 100gr cartridges out of my 243 Win.  I could shoot the same rifle today all day long.

With a 300 WSM, after a box of ammo, I usually quit.  My shoulder will begin to get a bit tender at that point.  I've only borrowed a regular 300 Win Mag, so I have never shot more than a handful of rounds out of one (though I think the recoil is pretty close to the 300 WSM).

I used to shoot a 35 Whelen (30-06 necked up to 35 caliber) loaded with hot 250 gr. rounds quite often (I used to hunt in SE Alaska where there are a lot of big bears).  I shot them out of a Remington 7600 with no recoil pad.  After 20 rounds, my shoulder would always be hurting.

As far as feeling recoil when hunting, you areright. Personally, I don't recall ever noticing the recoil when I am shooting at something.

If you can handle a 30-06, you can probably handle a 300 Win Mag without much problem.  It is a bit of a jump in the recoil department, but it is still quite bearable.  If you think it might bother you, start out with the lightest bullet weights you can find.

    Good Luck and happy hunting.
