  1. Screenplays (assuming you are referring to movies) do not have a set number of scenes. it is usually governed by number of pages. 120 pages is a rough industry standard. The industry estimates that one page equals 1 minute of screen time. The general idea is 120 minutes is the longest most people will sit through a movie. Another reason is so they can have a enough time to show the movie over and over in one night.

    Now from an indie filmmaker perspective, the more scenes you add the higher the budget.  The movie Saw limited their locations and scened based on budget, that is why most of the action takes place in one room.
