  1. I would say four granted from their mythology they explained why there were these seasons:

In Greek mythology, winter started because Demeter (goddess of harvest) was so devastated when her daughter Persephone was kidnapped by Hades (god of the underworld) to be his bride. Demeter would not allow any crops to grow and this corresponded to winter.

Zeus (king of the gods) could not bare to let the humans die on earth so he forced his brother Hades to return Persephone to her mother on earth, however, Hades did not want to lose his beloved consort so he tricked Persephone into eating 6 or some say 3 pomegranate seeds thereby forcing Persephone to return for 6 or 3 months back to the underworld.

The months that Persephone comes back up to Earth is spring and summer (these are the months when Demeter is happy, and so she allows the plants to grow) and the time she spends in the underworld corresponds to fall and winter where Demeter is grieving for the lost of her daughter and therefore she does not allow the earth to be fruitful.

    Hope this helps.
