How many separate flower heads can there be on a sunflower plant?

I'm in the South of England and my brother has grown from seed a sunflower, approx 6ft tall, with 23 separate buds plus 1 huge flower. Is this quite common?

There are so many varities of sunflowers.  The majority of them actually DO have multiple buds.  The Mammoth sunflower is the one-headed flower with a giant seedhead

it depends on the type of sunflower, many varieties can have multiple blooms, and there are many color variations that can be had as well, my favorite is a sunflower which grows multiples with a yellow and red variagated bloom
