  1. In a stock there are several shares depends on the value of a stock.  As the company profits, the more shares go into a stock and the value of a share increases.  Value of a share drops if the stock company or market as a whole is not doing so good.  For example, if Yahoo as a whole is benefitting by the end of the day, Yahoo stock value tend to go up the next morning;  more $ per share.  The more Yahoo shares you own, the more money you will earn by investing in Yahoo stock.

  2. They are the same thing.Usually stock is in £ or $. Like a bond is £1000 of stock. Whereas shares are not usually in £ ($) but 10p shares or 50p shares (nominal) However just to confuse things you can get shares in £ and they may be divided into say 4 stock units of 25p each (or £100 stock) Don't get hung up on it just use shares for equities and stock for bonds, everyone will understand you.

  3. If you are asking how many shares of stock are there iin a company, the answer is that it varies with every company.

what is usually refered to is the number of Shares outstanding (float).  This is the number of shares that the company has issued and is available for Buy/Sell on the open market.

    Example

    Microsoft has 9.31B shares outstanding

    TD Bank 802.90M shares outstanding
