I have a 1 gallon MOSO bamboo plant living in zone 6, and I'm wondering how many shoots it should create by next year considering it has 7 culms now, and it appears to be done shooting this year.

I've heard they are supposed to double in height and numbers each year, but I'd like to hear from some one who has seen what happens.

  1. Double in height  and number untill mature is a good guide for most species if they are kept at optimal growing conditions, like water, fertilizer, etc.

But remember Moso (Phyllostachys pubescens) is a runner and will spead, you may want barriers for it.

You may want to consider a clumping species. For your growth zone a species of Fargeia would work well. They are clumpers and cold tolerant.

  2. For the 1st year you will not get shoot but after that it will start to spread by a 1/3 each year.  I know they like good drainage and a lot of summer heat, sun and rain/water!  And monsoons,  DON'T over  fertilizer or mulch if you don't want fast growth.
