  1. i was about 3 hours into my first day of skiing when i was doing blue squares and by lunch i was doing black diamonds.  Within 2 years I was beating my parents, who have been skiing their whole lives.  I was 11 then and had been water skiing since I was 5 tho, so the feeling of being on skis was nothing new to me.

Since you're a beginner skiier though, I would recommend lessons.

  2. It took me about 3 years of lessons before I could ski the runs now marked blue. When I learned there were no such designations and the equipment and slope grooming was very primitive. But that was nearly 50 years ago.

A beginning skier can now learn to ride and enjoy the blue runs in about 6 hours of lessons over 2-3 days.  At least that is what many of my students are able to do.  I now teach 5 days a week and have seen changes that are incredible.  When I started skiing, we would ski pack a run for 3 hours to earn a daily lift ticket worth $3.25  US.  1958 dollars at that.  The equipment and grooming and teaching practice now allow a student to become confident about most green and some blue runs in a very few days.  Come join us for the fun.  It's a social sport as much as a snow sport.

  3. i did a few greens. maybe 2 runs or so, but no lessons, just the school of *** busts on a snowboard

  4. None

at the hill i learned at the easiest way down was down a green then down a blue, so the first run i took after the tow-rope

  5. Man-grav has a great answer. I would just like to add that you ask your instructor to teach you how to "side slip". That is the basic move you will use in your skiing. It is your basic move and the basis to advanced skiing. You will learn to turn and break using this simple maneuver.

  6. First get a book on learning to ski from the library and read it on the plane.  That way when you take a leason you know what they are trying to teach you and you already know the terms/lingo.  Secondly, take a lesson or two and learn how to turn and STOP.  Then when you know what you'd like to practice go do it.  Oh yes don't forget to have someone good with you when you get on your first chairlift.  Oh the joy of being a beginner again.  You'll have great memories.  Lastly look for a run that is only blue at the top.  If it's blue all the way through you might might not be to happy.

  7. I skied a Black Diamond after only 3 hours on skis....I didn't do it well, but I did it.

I'd say, I progressed correctly to a Blue Square after three days.

That was soooooo long ago. I can't believe it was 20 years ago.
