Question:

How many small fish can fit in a 2 gallon tank?

I got a little 2 gallon tank the other day and was wondering how many small fish can fit in it happily.

The kind that I would get would probably be 1/2 to 1 inch long.

Could I possibly just get 1 goldfish?

Thanks

  1. Zero, happily. Get a bigger tank or get a snail.

  2. you need at least 5 gallons for a guppie and a the betta

  3. No goldfish.  1 Paradise fish, but it would get more than 1 inch.  Settle for some shrimp.

Of course you could fill it full with sardines, add a little mustard or tomato sauce and dig in.

  4. None. Many will suggest a Betta, but your tank is too small even for them.

Goldfish grow to be 7-24" and require at least 20 gallons per fish.

For Bettas to live to their potential, they need proper care.

    1. A 5-gallon tank is minimal for Betta health. Smaller tanks and bowls do not maintain a consistent temperature, and it's nearly impossible to keep healthy water conditions.

    2. While a filter is not necessary for a betta if frequent water changes are done, it's a good idea in any tank in order to keep the water aerated and free of toxins.

    3. A heater is essential. Bettas need warm steady temperatures to thrive. Constant fluctuation leads to stress, which inevitably leads to disease and often death.

BTW, Bettas have been known to live for 10 years. I have personally known them to live for 6. These poor fish are abused by uneducated people who plop them in a small container, feed them, and then proclaim that they don't live more than a year or 2. Gee, I wonder why.

Best option for a 2-gallon would be a few shrimp or snails, but even for them you will need a filter and heater.

  5. The best fish to go in there would be a small school of 3-5 neon tetras. They are cute and small.  Very pretty and sociable.

  6. No goldfish. Goldfish get HUGE...unless they die early from being kept in a small tank or bowl. My last goldfish got to about 10 inches.

Your best bet is a betta. You could probably stick a couple ghost shrimp in there, too.

No neon tetras - they're active and need to  be kept in larger schools. A 2 gallon tank is TINY and very few fish are suited for it.

  7. Maybe about 3? Just remember the rule, 1inch per gallon. But you might not want to get goldfish due to the fact that they grow HUGE later on. So you could get a betta. They could use that space and I'm sure you'd make a great owner :)

  8. dont listen to them. its not abuse ok. happily 2 gallons, get a pretty betta with no other fish cuz they will fight them. he will be happy better yet get a female betta go to like petco and ask em which 1s a female, mine had a whole bunch on the side and the males in front. they r much smaller and stil no other fish, dont worry they will be happy i have my male betta in half a gallon and hes happy. my cousin had one in about a half a gallon clear glass bowl with no plants (which i reccomend) and nothing but water and hes been living for almost 4 years! so dont freak k

  9. in a 2 gallon you could probaly fit 3 neon tetras and that stupid rule of one inch of fish per gallon doesn't apply to everything you could even fit on male betta but no goldfish since they get i Don't know OVER 2 FEET LONG!!!!
