  1. That depends on the type of encoding (mp3, ogg, etc), how long the song is, and what bitrate it is encoded at.

I find that an mp3 encoded at CD quality (128 kbps) with a length of about 3-4 mins is usually about 3-4 MB in size.

There are 1024 MB in a GB which means that you could have over 40,000 songs on that hard drive if all you had on there was music in mp3 at 128 kbps.

  2. Realistically, more than you will ever want. I have 43,000 tracks, mostly at 192kbps MP3, and they're using about 115 gigabytes of disk space. I listen to hardcore punk, so perhaps the median track length is 2:00 averaged out, but even if Bach or String Cheese Incident is more your taste, 160 gigabytes holds an INSANE ammount of music. Even if all your audio is lossless, it's still probably like a thousand CDs worth! Apple intended the 160GB model to store a lot of video; few people have 160GB of audio, very few.

  3. 64 bits - 80000 songs

    128 bits - 40000 songs

    256 bits - 20000 songs

    something like this.

  4. there is no way on earth you have 160GB of songs.
