It depends on compression, I have my MP3's on 160kbps and it sounds pretty decent, at that rate yes, about 2,000, my cousins husband uses larger files, less compression, more quality and yes he only got about 500 in an 8Gig iPod.

Okay, let's do the math. 8 gigs = 8,589,934,592 bytes.

The songs I have are between 2,500,000 and 12,000,000 bytes.

So an 8 gig iPod should hold between 715 and 3435 songs.
